Minnesota Vikings 2010 NFL Draft Recap

NFL Draft Info - Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings came into the 2010 NFL Draft not needing a complete overhaul as they were coming off an appearance in the NFC Championship Game in 2009.

I'll take a pick-by-pick look at who the team chose with each of their picks, and how they may fit on the team in 2010.

Round 2 (34th overall)-Chris Cook, CB, Virginia
The Vikings traded down from #30 overall, picked up the Detroit Lions' second round pick and chose Cook.  With Antoine Winfield not getting any younger and Cedric Griffin recovering from a torn ACL in the NFC Championship Game, he could make an immediate impact and could open the season as a starter if Griffin is not ready to go.  Cook has good size (6'2", 212 pounds) as well, which could make him well-suited to the Cover 2 scheme the Vikings' like to employ.

Round 2 (51st overall)-Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford
With the offseason departure of Chester Taylor to Chicago, the Vikings had a need for a backup to Adrian Peterson. They hope to fill it with Gerhart, who they traded up to get.  He should be a nice complement to Peterson, but there is some concern about his workload last season (343 carries).

Round 4 (100th overall)-Everson Griffen, DE, USC
Griffen was considered to have first round talent, but many teams were concerned about his lack of consistent effort.  He provides some insurance if DE Ray Edwards holds out this year,  and he could move inside on passing downs to bolster an already potent Vikings' pass rush.

Round 5 (161st overall)-Chris DeGeare, OG, Wake Forest
The Vikings needed to add some depth to their offensive line, and DeGeare's size (6'4". 325 pounds) could make him a nice fit for the Vikings with some time to develop.

Round 5 (167th overall-compensatory pick)-Nate Triplett, LB, Minnesota
Triplett went from walk-on to starter during his collegiate career, so his work ethic shouldn't be questioned.  He may find a place as a special teamer and depth player at middle linebacker if E.J. Henderson (broken leg) is not ready to go for the start of the season.

Round 6 (199th overall)-Joe Webb, QB/WR, UAB
Webb started his collegiate career as a wide receiver, but finished as a quarterback.  He has good size (6'3", 223 pounds), but may have a hard time finding a spot in a deep Vikings' receiving corp.

Round 7 (214th overall)-Mickey Schuler, TE, Penn State
Schuler mainly served as a blocker during his collegiate career, so his receiving numbers were not gaudy.  His father, Mickey Sr., played 14 years in the NFL, so he has NFL pedigree.

Round 7 (237th overall)-Ryan D'Imperio, ILB, Rutgers
D'Imperio will make the switch to fullback in the NFL.

Overall Grade: B-
The Vikings added depth at some key spots, but the failure to procure a quarterback of the future could be a concern.  Gerhart and Griffen are nice value picks that should fit in nicely, and Cook could be a future (or possibly immediate) starter.
