FantasyDaddy Mock Draft 1.0

NFL Draft Info - NFL Mock Draft

With the Super Bowl just a week away, we have a keen eye on the NFL draft!

We have enlisted Joe Goodberry and Keith Beebe to head our extensive draft coverage.

With that said this is the official Fantasy Daddy Mock Draft version 1.0

We look forward to your comments and feedback.

1) Carolina – Nick Fairley - DT – Auburn

A no-brainer pick for a team that needs to add a signature player on defense. Nick Fairley is an elite talent at the defensive tackle position, equally at home clogging run lanes or using his athleticism to rip into backfields and pummel quarterbacks. Stud prospects like Patrick Peterson and Da’Quan Bowers are certainly game-changers, but a defensive lineman of Fairley’s caliber can practically control the game. Big difference.

2) Denver – Patrick Peterson - CB - LSU

I know this pairing has been mocked before, but it’s just a great fit. Denver will most likely lose CB Champ Bailey to free agency, Patrick Peterson can step in and start from day 1, while also upgrading their return game.

3) Buffalo – A.J. Green - WR – Georgia

Surprised? You shouldn’t be, since the Bills have made a habit of completely eschewing areas of need in favor of speed-merchant running backs and hideously overrated outside linebackers. However, this is actually a knockout pick for Buffalo, especially if the franchise is committed to Ryan Fitzpatrick as its long-term quarterback. Lee Evans’ is hardly a downfield threat these days, so it makes sense for the Bills to pair a lights-out receiver prospect like Green with stud wideout Stevie Johnson

4) Cincinnati  - Julio Jones - WR - Alabama

This might be the worst scenario for the Bengals on draft day. I bet they will target a WR. With Green going the previous pick, Julio Jones might be a better fit for the rugged AFC North anyways. Jones is big, strong, tough, and also the best blocking WR I’ve ever seen. If the Bengals want to get back to pounding the rock, Jones will go a long way in helping that happen.

5) Arizona – Da'Quan Bowers - DE – Clemson

Not really what the Cardinals had in mind, but it’s hard to be disappointed when the draft’s best defensive end prospect falls into your lap. Da'Quan Bowers is undoubtedly a better fit as a 4-3 end, but he should still be able to wreak plenty of havoc for a defense that ranked 18th in sacks this season.

6) Cleveland – Robert Quinn - DE – UNC

When was the last time the Browns had a pass rusher that made offenses worry? Cleveland needs a pass rush, and Quinn may be the best in this draft. It looks like the Browns will go back to a 4-3 defense, so DE in general is a huge need for them.

7) San Francisco – Prince Amukamara - CB – Nebraska

San Francisco’s secondary was a big reason why they failed to take advantage of the sub-par NFC West in 2010, but a corner of Prince Amukamara’s caliber would shore up that problem in a hurry. Amukamara has the size, speed, physiciality and intelligence to be a lockdown corner in the NFL, and he might be the best prospect at his position since Darrelle Revis in 2007.

8) Tennessee – Blaine Gabbert - QB  - Mizzou

The Titans have their choice of whatever QB they want in this scenario. I think Blaine Gabbert gives them a new direction they should be looking for. Clean on and off the field, to go with a huge arm.

9) Dallas – Marcell Dareus – DE – Alabama

Marcell Dareus has the size and strength to line up at the 5-technique in the 3-4 scheme, which means he’d be an outstanding addition to a Dallas defensive line in need of a powerful defensive end that can stuff the run and get after quarterbacks. This is an ideal pick for both the Cowboys and their nose tackle, Jay Ratliff, who has been a one-man-show on Dallas’ defensive line during the last few seasons.

10) Washington – Jake Locker – QB – Washington

Another pairing that’s starting to gain steam. Locker could be that mobile, strong armed QB Shanahan can mold into his type of Franchise QB.

11) Houston – Von Miller – OLB - Texas A&M

Von Miller is the tour de force edge-rushing linebacker Wade Phillips needs to make his 3-4 scheme go. Miller has underwhelming size for his position, but his speed is no joke, and he has a healthy bag of pass-rush moves to go with it. And if Brian Cushing is moved inside, then Houston is suddenly flashing a pretty impressive linebacker corps.

12) Minnesota  - Corey Liuget – DT – Illinois

This is one of my favorite prospects in the 2011 draft. With Pat Williams and Jimmie Kennedy likely to leave via free agency, Liuget fills a need for the Vikings, and could be a dominant force next to Kevin Williams.

13) Detroit – Tyron Smith – OT – USC

It’s quite likely Tyron Smith will be the draft’s No.1 offensive tackle by the time April rolls around, but this pick all depends on one simple question: are the Lions done mortgaging the left tackle position? If so, then Matthew Stafford will finally have the powerhouse blindside protector he so desperately needs. The Lions’ offense has improved exponentially during the last year and a half, but Stafford will never stay healthy for an entire season until Detroit commits to keeping him upright.

14) St. Louis – Jimmy Smith - CB – Colorado

Another one of my guys; Jimmy Smith is long and lean with good man to man skills andwould give the Rams two solid starting CBs. I know Bradford needs weapons, but there just isn’t one for him in this scenario.

15) Miami – Mike Pouncey – C/G – Florida

For a team with such a rich history at the center position, the Dolphins’ current front office has done a pathetic job of finding a franchise-caliber ox since taking over in January 2008. A prospect like Mike Pouncey would change everything along the interior of Miami’s offensive line, however, and his size, excellent footwork and nasty demeanor makes him a good fit to play next to Jake Long and Richie Incognito (if he’s re-signed, of course). This pick especially makes sense if Miami trades down to recoup it's second-round pick (which was included in the trade for Brandon Marshall).

16) Jacksonville – Cam Newton - QB – Auburn

I debated myself with this pick. The Jags have a few major needs. A future franchise QB may not be the highest, but this could be the perfect situation for Cam Newton. He can sit for a year or two until he’s ready. Which he desperately needs to be a successful QB in the NFL.

17) New England –  Cameron Jordan - DE – Cal

Cameron Jordan is quietly becoming one of the best defensive end prospects available this year, so provided the Patriots don’t stick to their guns and trade down from this spot, there’s a good chance New England will nab the California standout and reinforce the position that has become the team’s Achilles’ heel over the last few seasons. No team will want to see Cameron Jordan playing next to Vince Wilfork.

18) San Diego – J.J. Watt - DE – Wisconsin

San Diego can upgrade the raw talent almost anywhere on defense. Castillo and Garay are both good players, adding J.J. Watt could make their 3-man front dominate.

19) Giants – Nate Solder - OT – Colorado

The Giants’ inability to keep Eli Manning upright really cost them during the last two months of the season. And though the team might be more inclined to add talent at linebacker, a huge, athletic offensive tackle like Nate Solder could do wonders for the Giants’ aging offensive line. Solder’s a raw prospect with the potential to become an impenetrable wall if given the right coaching.

20) Tampa Bay – Aldon Smith - DE – Mizzou

Aldon Smith will give the Bucs a legitimate pass rushing threat they haven’t had since Simeon Rice. Smith can also slide inside in nickel situations, where he can be unstoppable at times.

21) Kansas City – Adrian Clayborn – DE – Iowa

Clayborn, like Bowers, is probably best suited to the 4-3 defensive end position, but he has the size, speed and active hands to do great work in the trenches of a 3-4 scheme. Clayborn is also strong enough to fight off double teams, and has great anticipation of the snap count.

22) Indianapolis – Derek Sherrod – OT – Miss St.

The rich get richer. This would be an awesome scenario for the Colts. Sherrod would start from day 1, and help protect their franchise. This team goes as far as the QB takes them, so they must surround him with talent any time they get the chance.

23) Philadelphia – Akeem Ayers – LB – UCLA

Philadelphia has some real questions outside of the defensive line, and an incredibly versatile prospect like Akeem Ayers would bring size, speed and intelligence to a defense that desperately needs a playmaker in its linebacker corps (unless, of course, you think Ernie Sims is doing just fine). Ayers is perhaps the most complete linebacker prospect to come out recently, adept at stopping the run and slashing into the backfield. And he’s scheme diverse, as well, which means you can put him at any linebacker position and he’ll likely produce.

24) New Orleans – Mark Ingram  - RB – Alabama

Not only does Ingram fill a major need for the Saints, he’s also a great value pick. Ingram would be the inside runner, while  Reggie Bush can be their 3rd down back. Has there ever been two Heisman winning RBs in the same backfield? Will this even count? I know, not funny.

25) Seattle – Brandon Harris – CB – Miami

Seattle did a solid job of improving its aging secondary by drafting safety Earl Thomas last year, but opposing quarterbacks lit up the Seahawks’ secondary to the tune of 249 passing yards per game this season. Look for the Seahawks to try and rectify this problem with a player like Brandon Harris who excels in man-to-man coverage and can turn his side of the field into a very lonely place for opposing receivers.

26) Baltimore – Torrey Smith – WR – Maryland

The Ravens offense and Joe Flacco will never take the next step until they can get a vertical threat outside. Torrey Smith can be that speed guy that will force defenses to stay honest, allowing Joe Flacco the opportunity to stretch the field and find his possession WRs underneath.

27) Atlanta – Cameron Heyward – DE – Ohio State

Atlanta needs help in the secondary, plain and simple. But taking a corner at this spot might be a reach if both Brandon Harris and Jimmy Smith are off the board, so the Falcons should look to build on its streaky defensive line by drafting juggernaut defensive end Cameron Heyward … who is just as streaky! But despite the fact Heyward struggles to always bring his A-game, his ability to completely overwhelm half of the offensive line makes him a prime candidate for a team that needs to get sacks from any defensive player not named John Abraham (who will be 33 years old in May).

28) New England – Justin Houston – OLB

New England would be winning the draft if it went just like this. Getting a DE like Jordan and OLB like Houston would be a big step towards recovering that “Patriot” way they had during the early 2000’s.

29) Chicago – Gabe Carimi – OT – Wisconsin

If there’s any sense in the world, then the Frank Omiyale experiment at left tackle ended once and for all after the Bears’ loss to Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game. Right tackle J’Marcus Webb has played well as a rookie, but he’s just that: a right tackle. And the Bears still lack a franchise-caliber lineman who can protect Jay Cutler’s blindside, which is where a prospect like Wisconsin’s Gabe Carimi would really come in handy. Carimi might need a bit of time to acclimate to the left tackle position in the NFL, but his “maul now, ask questions later” approach would bring tenacity and a mean streak to an offensive line that so sorely lacks a physical, assertive identity.

30) Jets – Muhammad Wilkerson – DE/DT – Temple

I really like Wilkerson. He’s a guy that will start climbing draft boards because of his versatility and quickness for his size. The Jets need somebody who can get off blocks. For as much pressure as they get on QBs, its usually because they have to blitz, and leave themselves vulnerable in the secondary. Wilkerson could play NT or DE for the Jets, perfect for Rex Ryan.

31) Packers – Mikel Leshoure - RB – Illinois

Rumors of the running game's demise in Green Bay have been slightly exaggerated, thanks to newly minted playoff horse James Starks, but it would still make sense for the Packers to stack the position they’ve been somewhat snake-bitten at over the last few years. Enter Illinois’ Mikel Leshoure, a big (6’0”), physical running back with the sneaky speed and burst to complement Starks, who is proving to be a bullish, downfield-running ace in his own right. Leshoure also seems to have excellent vision for a running back, and consistently hits running holes in a flash, which will only further encourage the Rashard Mendenhall comparisons.

32) Steelers – Anthony Castanzo – OT – Boston College

Steelers catch a break with Costanzo still on the board. He steps in day one at either LT or RT for the Steelers; who can now start building a younger, healthier line for the future.
