Fantasy Football: Buy And Sell-Week 7

NFL Football - Buy/Sell

Week 7 is already upon us, and another week with six teams off due to a bye creates a challenge for fantasy football owners. An even greater challenge is knowing when to time the market in terms of capitalizing on a player's peak value and on the flip side taking advantage of an undervalued player who may be ready to take off.

With that in mind, here is this week's edition of "Buy And Sell" here at Fantasy Daddy.com

Buy

Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta Falcons- Ryan has failed to top 170 passing yards in each of the past two games, and he has thrown exactly one touchdown in four straight games. He did get a rushing touchdown last week against the Carolina Panthers, but otherwise his production has not been outstanding. Week 7's matchup with the Detroit Lions does look particularly favorable, but it could be argued the Lions have not faced an offense as balanced as Atlanta's all season. The possible return to action of rookie wide receiver Julio Jones (hamstring) this week should help Ryan's production, as could the fact the Falcons defense may have trouble containing the Lions' offense. That would force the Falcons to pass the ball more than they would like and lead to increased production from Ryan in what could be a high-scoring game. After Atlanta's Week 8 bye, Ryan will get a couple of more favorable matchups against Indianapolis Colts in Week 9 and the New Orleans Saints in Week 10. This looks like a buying opportunity for fantasy owners who are looking to buy low on a talented player.

Fred Davis, TE, Washington Redskins- After a couple of dismal games prior to the Redskins' bye, Davis rebounded with six receptions for 95 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6. With Chris Cooley now slated to undergo finger surgery this week and possibly out for the season, there is no other remote threat at tight end for the Redskins. The potential quarterback switch in Washington from Rex Grossman to John Beck isn't likely to greatly impact Davis one way or the other, as he should be a primary target in the passing game regardless of who is under center. Some favorable matchups are on the horizon, as three of the Redskins next five opponentscurrently rank in the bottom eleven of the league against opposing tight ends. Davis may have been dropped in more than a few leagues recently, and he could be a solid trade target for those who have a need at tight end.

Brandon Lloyd, WR, St. Louis Rams- Lloyd was traded to the St. Louis Rams on Monday, where he will be reunited with Rams offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who was the head coach in Denver when Lloyd had his best NFL season in 2010 (77 receptions, 1,448 yards, 11 touchdowns). He had 19 catches for 283 yards in five games for the Broncos this season, but has yet to score a touchdown. That said, the catch total would lead the Rams if he had been there all season and yardage would rank a close second. The loss of quarterback Sam Bradford to a high ankle sprain, possibly for multiple games, certainly hurt Lloyd's fantasy prospects, but being in an offense with a coordinator that got the most out of him may mitigate that downside a little. Fantasy owners who need to add wide receiver depth with upside should consider trying to swing a deal for Lloyd, or add him if he was dropped earlier in the season.

Sell

Devin Hester, WR, Chicago Bears- Hester had five receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6, and also added in a kickoff return touchdown in the game. He now has 10 receptions over the past two games, with two return touchdowns in the last three games. But he did leave last week's game with a chest injury, and while it's not considered serious it helps fantasy owners see the risk attached to Hester. His role in the Bears' offense is at best inconsistent, and return touchdowns are next to impossible to rely on regularly. His slight frame (5'11", 190 lbs.) also makes him susceptible to injuries and a greater role as a wide receiver (should he have one going forward) increases that risk. Owners in leagues that reward return yardage can find good reason to hang onto Hester, but those in more traditional leagues could have a nice "sell high" opportunity here.

Jahvid Best, RB, Detroit Lions- Best had 12 carries for 37 yards and six receptions for 73 yards against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6. He left the game with what has been classified as "concussion-like symptoms", leaving his status for Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons in doubt at this point. Best set a season-high with 163 rushing yards against the Chicago Bears in Week 5, but that was propelled by an 88-yard touchdown run. Given his history of concussions dating back to college, it would not be surprising to see the Lions take it easy with him with a bye coming down the road in Week 9.  Tuesday's acquisition of Ronnie Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles is also a sign the team may be without Best for a couple games. If you own Best and can recognize an owner in your league that is in desperate need for a running back, now is a good time to take advantage while his playing status is unclear.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Oakland Raiders- Heyward-Bey had six receptions for 82 yards against the Cleveland Browns in Week 6,  which gives him  17 catches for 296 yards and a touchdown over the last three games. The Raiders have lost quarterback Jason Campbell (collarbone) for possibly the season, but Tuesday's trade for Carson Palmer with the Cincinnati Bengals gives Oakland another capable quarterback at the ready. That said, Kyle Boller will likely start in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs in order to give Palmer time to ready himself to start in Week 9 after the team's bye in Week 8. Palmer's presence should benefit all of the Raiders' pass catchers in time, but Heyward-Bey will be hard pressed to continue his recent production with Boller at the helm this week. Add in his inconsistency in the past, and now looks like a good time to look to trade Heyward-Bey while his fantasy value is at it's peak.
