The Pick Up Artist

Looking to make or break your fantasy season? Then continue to read on, staying current on the waiver wire has always been a recipe for staying competitive within your league. One or two savvy pickups during your season can make up for a heartbreaking injury or a possible draft pick that you put a lot of stock in that hasn’t panned out so far this year (paging Eric Hosmer owners)

Rafael Soriano-CP-Yankees:  David Robertson was the candidate out of the gate to take the reins from the injured Mariano Rivera but he was lit up once and then fell to a minor injury which might have been enough room for Soriano to sneak in there and lay claim to the closers gig. Soriano has done it in the past and the Yankees are paying him a boatload of cash anyway, the match almost seems perfect.  He is 2 for 2 in save opportunities so far and boasts a 2.57 ERA on the early season.

Recommendation: Robertson is out at least 3 weeks and Soriano is a must own player in all formats right now. If for some reason he is still sitting on your wire, put in the claim.

James McDonald-SP-Pirates:  This is kid has been the bright spot in the Pirates rotation so far this season and he has pitched better than his 2-2 record indicates. In 7 starts this year he is sporting a 2.42 ERA with 39 Ks in 44 innings pitched. He was a hard luck loser against the Astros in his last start by allowing the game’s only run in over 8 innings of work. He takes on the Nationals today against another solid youngster Jordan Zimmerman.

Recommendation: He is currently owned in 38% of Yahoo leagues right now, I think if he pitches well today that number is going to spike. He is a deep league no-brainer pick up and he should be at least on your watch list in standard leagues.

Omar Infante-2B-Marlins:  He is currently owned in 70% of yahoo leagues but his numbers are still solid and he is a multi hit candidate it seems on a nightly basis. The power surge he had in April we all knew was an anomaly but his .300 average is definitely not.  He is hitting .336 on the season with 6 bombs and 4 stolen bases.

Recommendation: If you are in the market for some help at the 2 bag or you play in a league where you can start “Infielders”, Infante is worth adding to your roster. He is owned in most leagues but if he continues to hit over .320 that owner percentage is going to approach 90%.

Andy Dirks-Of-Tigers:  He is currently owned in 30% of yahoo leagues but it is getting hard to ignore what he is doing with regular playing time in that Tigers lineup. He has essentially taken over Boesch’s spot in the order and is the one that is benefitting from having Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder hitting behind him.  He has 30 hits in 80 at bats so far this year with 3 bombs and 12 RBIs. I don’t expect him to continue to hit .370 but he will continue to see pitches if he is penciled in at the 2 spot of the Tiger’s lineup.

Recommendation: He is a deep league pick up without a doubt right now or at least until the wheels fall off. He should be put on your watch list in standard leagues unless you have been ravaged by injury and could use the production today.  Sometimes you just have to pounce because if he is the real deal someone else in your league is bound to take a chance on him.

Fantasy Baseball: Buy And Sell-Pitchers-5/15/12

With all the changes going on with the closers around baseball, we are going reliever-centric with this week’s “Buy And Sell” for pitchers. As always, send me any feedback via Twitter @bradberreman24.

Buy

Heath Bell, RP, Miami Marlins

Bell has struggled thus far in his first season with the Marlins, sporting a 10.03 ERA in 14 appearances (11.2 innings) along with eight strikeouts and 12 walks while converting three out of seven save chances. He was briefly removed from the closer role, but manager Ozzie Guillen has recently announced he will get the job back. Whether that holds true is up in the air, and the Marlins have played much better in May after struggling early. So there looks likely to be plenty of save opportunities to be had, and Bell should get every opportunity to keep the job with the contract Miami gave him over the winter. All things considered, things are not likely to be much worse for Bell and the opportunity to buy very low on him is here if the owner that has him in your league is desperate to unload him.

Kenley Jansen, RP, Los Angeles Dodgers

Jansen recently replaced Javy Guerra as Dodgers’ closer, and he has not disappointed by converting two straight save opportunities. He is now 2-0 with a 2.29 ERA in 19 appearances (19.2 innings this season) with 30 strikeouts and eight walks and seven holds. Jensen has allowed just one run over his last 14 appearances dating back to mid-April, so it looks like he is the closer for the Dodgers for the foreseeable future. Even if he were to struggle and be removed from the role at some point Jensen offers fantasy owners elite level peripherals, particularly strikeouts, so he would retain some value as long as he is healthy. His ownership percentage is certainly on the rise right now, but there could still be a buying opportunity here in a trade if you have depth elsewhere on your roster and need bullpen help.

Sell

Sean Marshall, RP, Cincinnati Reds

Marshall converted his sixth save of the season, and the first for him in May, Monday night against the Atlanta Braves and he is now 1-4 with a 4.15 ERA in 14 appearances (13 innings) this season. With Ryan Madson (elbow) out for the season, the Reds are looking for a closer and Marshall has fit the bill to this point. That said, it may only be a matter of time before hard-throwing Aroldis Chapman gets an opportunity to close games and if Marshall has a couple rough outings in a row his leash may get short very quickly. It’s a big question if Marshall can maintain the closer-worthy peripherals he has to this point in the season (13.2 K.9), and his track record (7.6 career K/9 rate) would suggest he can’t even with good control (just three walks this season). Marshall’s fantasy value may not get much higher than it is right now, and if you are an owner that has been hit by injuries to position players it may be time to trade him for something of value.

Frank Francisco, RP, New York Mets

Francisco’s hold on his role as Mets’ closer looked tenuous after two bad outings in a row last Friday and Sunday, but manager Terry Collins elected to stick with him and he picked up his ninth save of the season Monday night against the Milwaukee Brewers despite allowing one run on two hits in his inning of work. He has only blown two saves so far this season, but has an ugly 8.59 ERA over 17 appearances (14.2 innings) along with 16 strikeouts and eight walks. The Mets have other options to close games, including Jon Rauch and Bobby Parnell, so if Francisco continues to struggle (six runs allowed over his last three outings) a change is likely to come. Now looks like the time to dangle him in trade talks to an owner in your league that needs saves while something valuable could still be acquired.

Buy & Sell: Batters

Another week in the books another chance to look around the league and figure out who we need to add to our rosters and who we need to just cut bait with. Let’s check out this week’s Buy & Sell: Batters.

Buy:

Andy Dirks, OF (Det) – Apparently only 25% of all Yahoo fantasy owners have taken notice what Andy Dirks has done over the course of the 2012 season; he’s been hitting .371/.413/.629 with 3 HRs and 11 RBI along with 5 doubles and 2 triples. Do we expect him to sustain those numbers over the course of the season? No, not at all. But these last 10 games he’s been red hot, and with a number of outfielders going down (Desmond Jennings the latest), Dirks is one player you should scoop up and ride him while he’s hot.

2 Start Pitchers - Week of 5/14

Alright, here's a quick 2 Start pitchers update featuring some young pitchers.  I'll continue to emphasize that pitching is deep and that this is a viable strategy, and if you're convincing enough you can take budding young stars on a hot streak, and parlay them into a trade up for perhaps a struggling ace or position player.  We're about 6 weeks into the season, so now is the time to reallu start analyzing your teams to see what you need to improve on.

Christian Friedrich - He won his major league debut last week, and now it's time to jump on the bandwagon especially because he may be able to get you two wins this week.  Don't get too excited because his major league debut was against the Padres, but he continues to have an easy schedule this week facing the San Francisco Giants and Seattle Mariners.  Additionally, if you also want to play this matchup, Jeremy Guthrie has the same matchups for the Colorado Rockies.
